Julian Hamm

Julian is a facilitator at heart.  People get so much more from a course if they’re communicating with each other, rather than simply looking at a PowerPoint slide or listening to someone talking at the front.  Julian likes to get people up on their feet as much as possible doing something physical, even if it’s as simple as standing in front of a display they’ve made, discussing and disagreeing, contributing and connecting.  Any room of people will know something that he doesn’t, it’s just a case of giving them the structure and the space to express what they know collectively.

Julian has always been in education and communication.  He has an engineering degree from Imperial College, so he knows about numbers and data.  But he also knows what makes technical ideas difficult – in management science particularly – so he is obsessed with really getting down to the nitty-gritty basics and finding ways to turn that understanding into compelling learning experiences. After management consultancy with Accenture and a period in the City, Julian taught Physics for ten years, where he wrote animated lessons that are still used by hundreds of schools all over the world.  This gave him the credibility to advise the UK government at the highest level on messaging for their radioactive waste disposal programme.

The appeal of L&D is two-fold: first there’s the intellectual and creative challenge of designing a course that’s compelling, meaningful and value-added.  Second there’s the human contact involved in delivering to people whose context only really emerges over the course of the day.  Establishing trust, making connections, finding a common sense of fun and challenge are all part of what makes helping people such a pleasure.
